S31: TELEPHONE KIOSK K8

Designed by the architect Bruce Martin and introduced in 1968 this was the last of the cast metal 'Red' boxes. It was simpler to construct than its predecessors and had large toughened glass windows. With the dramatic reduction in the numbers iof call boxes in the 1980 the K8s all but disappeared. A few do remain, however, including some that were used on the London Underground internal telephone system. The photograph shows a pair of K8s, in blue, on the platform at South Kensington station in the summer of 2016.

(OO Gauge / 4mm Scale)
